Critical Shift: Aftermath

And here we are at the end of my Shadowfist fiction, about 47,000 words total, 17,000 of which are the CS story. I don't plan to write any more of it, or at least that's what I'm telling myself. (The fact that I left a seed for the Empire of Evil story should be ignored.)

I'm posting this now because it's short -- it could've been left in the last full chapter, but I think it works better as an epilogue.

Curtis Boatman felt something damp sliding down his face. He painfully opened his eyes.

He saw a pair of boots. He slowly turned his head, revealing a stained white lab coat, a gun that looked cobbled together out of spare parts pointing directly at him, and finally a woman's face, one that he hadn't seen in a very long time.

"How the mighty have fallen," she said. "Karma's a bitch, isn't it, Curtis?"

"Anita," he muttered.

"You remember me? I'm shocked." Anita Dao glared down at him. "I should just kill you right now."

The gun looked like junk, but he had no doubt it worked extremely well. After all, this was the mind that had invented Arcanotechnology.

She sighed. "Ten years ago, you wouldn't even have had a chance to wake up. These days, I have bigger problems."

She gestured to somebody he couldn't see. He felt himself being lifted by the arms.

"Bring him," she said, "Try not to kill him, but don't worry about being gentle. We'll figure out what to do with him later."
